Endodontology / Root Canal Treatment

The first root canal treatment is usually carried out in one or two treatment sessions and includes the following steps: To ensure that the treatment can be carried out painlessly, the tooth is often locally anaesthetised. The tooth crown is opened and the nerve cavity (pulp chamber) is cleaned.

The root canals are then searched for and widened with small files. This "widening" enables the cleaning and disinfection of the entire root canal system. Optical magnifying aids (magnifying glasses or surgical microscope) are very helpful for the individual work steps in order to recognize and treat the fine and strongly branched anatomy of the root canals in the course of the treatment.

The root canal system with its main and side canals is cleaned, disinfected and shaped under visual control if possible.

After shaping, cleaning and disinfection, the cavity is filled with a plastic sealing material. As a final step, the access in the tooth crown is closed with a bacteria-proof and stable filling. In this way, the tooth can be rebuilt or, as a rule, provided with a crown.
